What a dog DNA test can and can't tell you

A cheek swab can show which breeds are in your dog's mix, whether your dog carries known gene variants linked to inherited disease or drug sensitivity, and the genetics behind traits like coat and size. Both makers also match relatives.

A swab can't diagnose an illness. Embark says a genetic test is not a clinical diagnosis, and only your vet can decide whether your dog actually has a disease, using exams, history, bloodwork or X-rays. (Embark help, Embark)

Independent experts urge even more caution. In an American Kennel Club article, the canine geneticist Elinor Karlsson explains that a positive result for a variant linked to disease doesn't yet answer the question every owner asks: what is the chance my dog will get sick? The same article warns that some conditions involve several genes, so a clear result on one of them isn't an all-clear. (AKC) Karlsson and two veterinarians made the same case in a 2018 comment piece in Nature. They called for testing standards and for genetic counseling to be part of consumer pet tests. (Nature)

In our editorial view, treat a breed result as a useful clue and a health flag as something to take to your vet, not a verdict.

The picks in detail

Embark Breed + Health: best all-round breed and health test

This kit pairs a large breed panel with a broad health screen. Embark says it tests for 400+ breeds, types and varieties, including dingoes, wolves and village dogs. It claims over 99% breed ancestry accuracy and traces the family tree back to the great-grandparents. (Embark)

On the health side, Embark lists 270+ genetic health conditions. It adds 55 traits, a predicted adult weight, a genetic diversity measure, and 4 allergy risk scores (environmental, food, contact and flea). Embark says it reads hundreds of thousands of genetic markers with Illumina's CanineHD microarray. It is also a research partner of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. (Embark how it works)

Embark's Relative Finder ranks matches by how much DNA they share and offers optional messaging. Embark says 94% of dogs tested find at least one relative as close as a first cousin. (Embark Relative Finder)

Other maker-stated details:

  • US return shipping is free in a prepaid USPS mailer. Samples stay stable for 6 months, but tests expire 2 years after purchase.
  • Results usually arrive 2 to 4 weeks after the lab gets the sample, online and in the app.
  • Behavior insights are a paid upgrade.
  • Embark's genetic specialists and veterinary geneticists can answer questions about your dog's results. They can't diagnose or give medical advice. (Embark help)

Who it's for: owners of mixed-breed or rescue dogs who want one report covering breed, inherited health risks, traits and allergy risk.

Skip it if you only care about breed (Embark Breed ID is the breed-only version and can be upgraded later), or if you want behavior results without paying for an add-on.

Wisdom Panel Premium: best for the most Wisdom Panel health tests, with a genetic consult

Wisdom Panel Premium is Wisdom's most complete dog test. It uses the same 430+ breed panel as the other Wisdom kits, which Wisdom calls the largest on the market, and adds 270+ genetic health tests, 25+ behavior tests and 50+ trait tests. (Wisdom Panel Premium)

What sets it apart is the genetic consult: if a health result comes back "at risk", Premium includes a consult with a veterinary genetics specialist. Premium also adds a genetic diversity (heterozygosity) measure and a chromosome map that shows where each breed in a mix appears in your dog's DNA.

Other maker-stated details:

  • Results take 2 to 3 weeks after the lab receives the sample.
  • Wisdom says it has 5 million+ pets in its system and a 99.9% chance of finding a relative. You can message matches and compare results. (Wisdom Panel)

Who it's for: owners who mostly want health screening and value a specialist explaining any risk finding. It's also a good fit for a mixed-breed dog with a long list of possible breeds behind it.

Skip it if you mostly want breed and medication-sensitivity results. Wisdom Panel Essential covers those.

Wisdom Panel Essential: best breed-first test that still flags key medical risks

Wisdom Panel Essential is the middle Wisdom kit and the one we link to on Amazon. It covers the full 430+ breed panel and reports a breed mix down to 1%. It traces ancestry back three generations and includes relative matching. (Wisdom Panel Essential)

Its health section is narrower than Premium's: 25+ medical complication tests, for gene variants that can make common medications or routine procedures like spaying or neutering risky. The list includes MDR1 medication sensitivity, several clotting disorders and the CDDY/IVDD back risk. You also get 50+ trait tests and 3 behavior tests, and Wisdom offers an upgrade to Premium's wider panels later.

The single-kit Amazon listing says 30 genetic health conditions (including MDR1 and IVDD), 51 traits and 3 behaviors, slightly different from the maker page. (Amazon)

Other maker-stated details:

  • Results take 2 to 3 weeks after the lab receives the sample.
  • Results are online only, with a downloadable technical report.
  • Puppies can be tested once they're weaned.

Who it's for: owners of mixed-breed dogs who mainly want to know "what is my dog?" but also want a heads-up on drug and surgery risks to share with their vet.

Skip it if you want the full inherited-disease screen. In that case choose Premium or Embark Breed + Health.

Buying note: our Amazon link may open on a 2-pack listing. If you're testing one dog, pick the 1-count size before you add it to your cart.

Embark Breed ID: best if you only want the breed mix

Embark Breed ID uses the same 400+ breed, type and variety panel as Breed + Health. Embark says it has over 99% breed ancestry accuracy and is the only dog DNA test that accurately identifies village dogs. It traces ancestry and geographic origins back to the great-grandparents and includes Relative Finder. (Embark Breed ID)

It doesn't include health results. Embark's own FAQ says Breed ID tells you nothing about your dog's health. You can add a Total Health Upgrade later without a second swab, which unlocks the 270+ condition screen, traits and allergy risk scores. Behavior insights are a separate upgrade.

Other maker-stated details:

  • Results take 2 to 4 weeks, and the swab, activation and mailing steps match Breed + Health.

Who it's for: curious owners of shelter dogs who want the most detailed breed story and relative matches now, with the option to add health results later.

Skip it if you already know you want health screening. Starting with Breed + Health is simpler.

Also consider: Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery

Wisdom's entry kit uses the same 430+ breed panel and adds one health test, MDR1, plus 3 behavior tests, relative matching and a three-generation family tree, with results in 2 to 3 weeks. Not an affiliate link: Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery

How to choose a dog DNA test

1. Decide whether you want health results. Breed-only kits (Embark Breed ID, Wisdom Breed Discovery) answer "what is my dog?". Full health kits (Embark Breed + Health, Wisdom Premium) screen hundreds of inherited conditions. Wisdom Essential sits between, focused on medication and surgery risks. 2. Look at what happens after a risk result. Wisdom Premium includes a genetic consult for "at risk" findings. Embark's specialists can review results from any Embark test. Either way, plan to bring the report to your vet. 3. Don't choose on breed count alone. Wisdom lists 430+ breeds and Embark 400+ breeds, types and varieties. Both panels are large. 4. Think about relatives. Both makers match relatives. Wisdom quotes a 99.9% chance of a relative and Embark quotes 94% finding at least a first cousin. Those numbers measure different things, so don't compare them directly. 5. Check the timing. Both makers count from when the lab receives the sample, so add shipping time both ways. 6. Read the privacy terms. Both makers say test data feeds their research, so read the privacy policy before you swab if that matters to you.

Swabbing tips that prevent a failed test

Tests most often fail because there isn't enough DNA on the swab. The makers advise:

  • Keep the mouth food-free. Embark asks for no food for 30 minutes before swabbing. Wisdom asks you to wait at least two hours after a meal or treat. Water is fine.
  • Swab long enough. Embark recommends 30 to 60 seconds and says longer swabbing improves your chances. Wisdom asks for at least 15 seconds, rolling the swab firmly along the inside of the cheek.
  • Follow the drying or sealing step. Wisdom swabs need at least five minutes to dry. Embark swabs go into a tube of liquid that you seal and shake.
  • Activate before you mail. Embark won't process a kit that hasn't been activated online.

FAQ

Which is more accurate, Embark or Wisdom Panel?

Both claim to be the most accurate. Embark says over 99% breed ancestry accuracy, and Wisdom says it has the largest breed database and the most accurate detection system. We found no independent check of either claim. Either kit gives a detailed breakdown for a typical mixed-breed dog.

Can a dog DNA test diagnose a disease?

No. A health result shows a genetic variant linked to higher risk, not an illness. Embark says only your vet can determine whether your dog has a clinical disease. Experts quoted by the AKC say the actual chance of getting sick often isn't known yet. Share any "at risk" result with your vet before you change care.

How long do dog DNA test results take?

Wisdom quotes 2 to 3 weeks and Embark 2 to 4 weeks after the lab receives the sample. A swab with too little DNA can mean a retest.

What is MDR1 and why does it matter?

MDR1 is a gene variant that affects a drug-pumping protein. Wisdom says dogs with it may have severe reactions to some common medications. It's included in Wisdom Breed Discovery, Essential and Premium. If your dog has it, tell your vet.

Is there a good DNA test for cats?

These kits are for dogs. For cats, we cover Basepaws Breed + Health. It compares your cat with 21 reference breeds, checks 64 genetic markers linked to 43 diseases, and screens the mouth for signs linked to three common dental conditions. Results take 4 to 6 weeks.
